BMW 420d Gran Coupe
BMW previously presented the updated BMW 4 Series. This received, among other things, a new suspension and design. We went out with the 420d Gran Coupé.
Gran Coupe
The appeal of the Gran Coupé lies mainly in its unique design. It is the combination of a sporty coupe with an elegant four-door. We also find that elegant and sporty character in the interior.
The new 4 Series got an even sportier and dynamic look compared to the previous generation. For example, the xenon lamps were replaced by modernized LED headlights. You get LED fog lights at the front as standard and LED taillights at the rear as well. We also find modified air intakes and specific decorative elements for this line.
Our test car was finished in Snapper Rocks Blue. This is one of two new exterior colors available exclusively for the 4 Series models. It is a bright extrovert color that brings out the elegant shapes of the Gran Coupé. This will now be one of our favorite exterior colors.
New suspension
The new 4 Series Gran Coupé has now also received a new suspension. On the one hand, this is set more rigidly, which gives you an even sportier driving experience. On the other hand, the car also feels very comfortable, making it very useful for everyday traffic.
Multifunctional instrument display
Our test car was equipped with the optional digital instrument cluster. There are 3 different display options depending on which driving mode you are in: ECO PRO, COMFORT and SPORT. In COMFORT the image looks similar to the analogue instrument cluster. In SPORT it is mainly the red colors that stand out and the clearly readable speed indicator. In ECO PRO mode, the digital instrument cluster looks predominantly blue. This gives an extra digital touch to the car and, in our opinion, is certainly worth considering.
420d Gran Coupe
There are many choices in terms of engines for the 4 Series Gran Coupé.
Our test car was the 420d Gran Coupé. You can choose this with a manual gearbox (42,400 euros) or with a steptronic automatic transmission (from 44,690 euros). Under the hood we find a four-cylinder diesel engine with a capacity of 1,995 cc. This block delivers 190 hp and propels this coupe to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. The top speed is 240 km/h and the torque is over 400 Nm. The car feels powerful and torquey and is a real pleasure to drive. The 420d is also available as an xDrive variant (from 44,950 euros). If you want even more horsepower, there is a wide choice of diesel models. Ranging from the 425d with 224 hp to the BMW 435d xDrive Gran Coupé with 313 hp. For this you have to pay at least 59,500.
There is also a wide range of engine types in the range of petrol engines. The entry-level model is the 420i with 184 hp (from: 39,000 euros). We also have a 430i with 252 hp (from 44,600 euros). The top model is a 440i xDrive Gran Coupé with 326 hp (from 58,000 euros).
Conclusion
In our opinion, the updated BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé stands out thanks to its good looks. We like the mix between elegance and sportiness and if we had to order a 4 Series, it would undoubtedly be in Snapper Rocks Blue. Inside, you sit very comfortably in the front. Headroom is slightly tighter at the rear. The 420d drives very smoothly and the new suspension gives an extra sporty touch to the driving experience.
