This is the VW ID.5. In this range test I want to discover the range in real driving conditions. I’m going to test the range on the highway to find out the minimum range of this car. I’m also going to do a second range test at lower average speeds to know the maximum range. I also wanted to know how long it takes to charge the battery with a fast charger.
This is the VW ID.5 with the 77 kWh battery. This is the ID.5 Pro Performance version. It has a WLTP range of up to 520 km. The VW ID.5 has a power of 150 kW – 204 hp. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds. The VW ID.5 is equipped with rear-wheel drive
I will first test the range at higher average speeds on the highway. I want to know what the minimum range of this car could be. At the start of this part of the test, the battery is at 86%. I base my estimated range on the average consumption and the net capacity of the battery. I did the test in November and it was between 4,5 and 5,5 degrees.
For the first part of the test, I drove from Brussels to Namur and back a bit, for a total of 94 km. The battery dropped to 54% and the estimated range based on a consumption of 25 kWh was 308 km. I left the highway for some sporty driving on country roads. After that, the battery had dropped to 48% and the estimated range increased slightly to 310 km.
Now it’s time to drive back to Brussels on the motorway. Let’s take a look at my results. I have run the battery empty to 40% and the consumption has dropped slightly during this ride. The range on the highway ended up to be 320 km based on an average consumption of 24,1 kWh.
Battery% | Distance driven (km) | Average consumption (kWh) | temperature (°C) | Estimated range |
---|---|---|---|---|
86% | since start | 4,5 | start test | |
79% | 19 | 29,6 | 5 | 260 |
75% | 33 | 25,6 | 5 | 301 |
73% | 37 | 27,2 | 5,5 | 283 |
70% | 46 | 27 | 5,5 | 285 |
60% | 74 | 25,9 | 5,5 | 297 |
55% | 89 | 25,6 | 301 | |
54% | 94 | 25 | 5 | 308 |
48% | 111 | 24,8 | 5 | 310 |
45% | 121 | 24,5 | 5,5 | 314 |
40% | 137 | 24,1 | 5 | 320 |
Now let’s test the range at lower city speeds. I want to know what the maximum range of this car could be. At the start of this part of the test, the battery is at 34%. The temperature was between 5 and 8 degrees. I did a test drive of 63 km, first in Brussels. Then I left the city and drove on small city roads. It was in an urban area, sometimes a bit more in the countryside, but with many opportunities to drive continuously, usually between 50-70 km/h.
Let’s take a look at my results. After a test drive of 63 km in total, I drained the battery to 18%. The average consumption eventually amounted to 17 kWh and the estimated range is 453 km.
Battery% | Distance driven (km) | Consumption (kWh) | Temperature (°C) | Estimated range |
---|---|---|---|---|
34% | 5 | start test | ||
31% | 12 | 18,8 | 6 | 410 |
29% | 22 | 16,4 | 5,5 | 470 |
27% | 30 | 15,6 | 5,5 | 494 |
25% | 34 | 16,2 | 7 | 475 |
20% | 53 | 16,7 | 8 | 461 |
18% | 63 | 17 | 7,5 | 453 |
Now let’s do a charging test at a fast charger. The VW ID.5 is equipped with a combined charging system. With this system, the VW ID.5 can be charged with both AC and DC. For this test I will charge the car at a DC fast charger. The VW ID.5 can fast charge at a speed of up to 135 kW. VW says it takes 29 minutes to charge from 5% to 80% at a rate of 135kW.
At the start of the test, the battery is down to 11%. It’s 8 degrees outside. The car indicated that it would take about 1h15 minutes to fully charge the battery. I’m going to do a 30 minute charging test. After 10 minutes I was charging at a speed of 106.7 kW. The battery increased to 34% and we gained about 103km on the range indicator. After 20 minutes I noticed that we were charging at a speed of 113.1 Kw. I gained another 101 km of range and the battery is now at 55%. After 30 minutes the battery is at 77%. The charging speed is still at 87.9 kW. So we went from 11% to 77% in 30 minutes, and we gained 297km of range.
Start test | After 10 min. | After 20 min. | After 30 min. | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Range indicator (km) | 43 | 146 | 247 | 340 |
Increase range (km) | 103 | 101 | 93 | |
Battery (%) | 11% | 34% | 55% | 77% |
Charging speed (kW) | 106,7 | 113,1 | 87,9 | |
Temperature (°C) | 8 | 8 | 8,5 | 8 |
I haven’t done an AC charging test on this car, but let’s look at some theoretical information. The charging speed of the on-board charger is 11 kw.
In conclusion, I can say that the range of the VW ID.5 is somewhere between 320 km and 453 km, based on comparable driving conditions and measured at fairly low temperatures between 4,5 and 8 degrees. I suspect you’ll probably get more range at much higher temperatures.
