In this POLESTAR 2 LONG RANGE SINGLE MOTOR RANGE TEST, I want to discover the range in real driving conditions. I am going to test the range in the city to find out the maximum range of this car. I am also going to do a second range test at higher average highway speeds to know the minimum driving range. I also wanted to know how long it takes to charge the battery at a fast charger. Have a look at my POV test drive video with this car.
This is the Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor with the 75 kWh battery. It has a WLTP range of up to 551 km. The Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor has an output of 231 horsepower. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.4 sec. The Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor features front-wheel drive.
I will first test the range at higher average highway speeds. I want to know what the minimum range of this car could be. At the beginning of this part of the test, the battery is at 90%. I base my estimated range on average consumption and net battery capacity. I did the test in November and it was between 6 and 9 degrees.
For this test, I drove from Brussels to Namur and back, for a total ride of 145 km. The battery dropped to 51% and the estimated range based on 20.2 kWh consumption was 371 km.
Battery% | Distance (km) | Consumption (kWh) | Temperature (°C) | Estimated range |
---|---|---|---|---|
90% | start | 7 | start test | |
85% | 18 | 21,7 | 7 | 346 |
80% | 31 | 22,7 | 7 | 330 |
75% | 48 | 22,9 | 6 | 328 |
72% | 61 | 21,7 | 7 | 346 |
66% | 87 | 20,9 | 7 | 359 |
59% | 108 | 21,1 | 8 | 355 |
55% | 124 | 20,9 | 9 | 359 |
51% | 145 | 20,2 | 9 | 371 |
Now let’s do a charging test at a fast charger. The Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor is equipped with a combined charging system. With this system, the Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor can be charged with either AC or DC. For this test, I am going to charge the car at a DC Fast Charger. The Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor can fast charge at up to 155 kW. Polestar says it takes 35 minutes to charge from 10% to 80% at 155 kW.
At the beginning of the test, the battery is down to 20%. It’s 7 degrees outside. The car indicated that it would take about 90 minutes to fully charge the battery. I’m going to do a 30-minute charging test. After 10 minutes, I was charging at 99.2 kW. The battery increased to 39% and we gained about 95 km on the range indicator. After 20 minutes, I noticed that we were charging at a speed of 80.2 Kw. I gained another 70 km of range and the battery is now at 56%. After 30 minutes, the battery is at 71%. The charging speed is still at 62.6 kw. So we went from 20% to 71% in 30 minutes, and we gained 235 km of range.
Start test | After 10 min. | After 20 min. | After 30 min. | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Range indicator (km) | 85 | 180 | 250 | 320 |
Increase range (km) | 95 | 70 | 70 | |
Battery (%) | 20% | 39% | 56% | 71% |
Charging speed (kW) | 99,2 | 80,2 | 62,6 | |
Temperature (°C) | 7 | 7 | 8 | 8 |
I haven’t done an AC charging test with this car, but let’s look at some theoretical information. The charging speed of the on-board charger is 11 kw. According to Polestar, charging from 0% to 100% takes 8h.
I will now test the range at lower speeds in the city. I want to know what the maximum range of this car could be. At the beginning of this part of the test, the battery is at 71%. The temperature was between 5 and 6 degrees. I did a 65 km test drive, first in Brussels. Then I left the city and drove on small town roads. It was in an urban area, sometimes a little more rural, but with plenty of opportunities for continuous driving, usually between 50-70 km/h.
Let’s take a look at my results. After a test drive for a total of 65 km, I drained the battery to 55%. The average consumption ended up at 17.2 kWh and the estimated range is 436 km.
Battery% | Distance (km) | Consumption (kWh) | Temperature (°C) | Estimated range |
---|---|---|---|---|
71% | start | 7 | start test | |
67% | 18 | 17,1 | 6 | 439 |
65% | 24 | 16,9 | 6 | 444 |
60% | 47 | 16,7 | 6 | 449 |
58% | 55 | 16,6 | 6 | 452 |
55% | 65 | 17,2 | 5 | 436 |
As a conclusion, I can say that the range of the Polestar 2 Long Range Single Motor is somewhere between 371 km and 436 km, based on similar driving conditions and measured in fairly cold temperatures between 5 and 9 degrees. I suspect that in much higher temperatures you will probably get more range and in winter at much lower temperatures you will get lower range.
