AUDI Q5 SPORTBACK 55 TFSI e RANGE TEST

I did a range test with the Audi Q5 Sportback Competition 55 TFSI e quattro 367 hp S tronic. I will test the range on the highway to find out the minimum electric range of the 2021 Audi Q5 Sportback TFSI e. I will also do a range test at lower average speeds in the city to find out the maximum electric range of the Audi Q5 Sportback Plug-In Hybrid. I will also do a charging test at a public charging station (AC) to find out how long it takes to fully charge the battery with the 7.4 kW on-board charger of the Audi Q5 Sportback 55 TFSI e.

AUDI Q5 SPORTBACK 55 TFSI e QUATTRO COMPETITION

There are several versions of the Audi Q5 Sportback Plug-in hybrid available and this is actually the sporty top version, the Competition 55 TFSI e quattro. It has 367 hp and goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds. It has a lithium battery with a net capacity of 14.4 kWh. I find different numbers about the WLTP range. The press release says 73 km, the configurator says more than 55 km, so I’ll just share both numbers with you. Check out my full POV test drive of the Audi Q5 Sportback Plug-in hybrid here. In my night test drive, you can see a demo of the lights and ambient lighting.

Frequently Asked Questions:

I’m going to test the range on the highway first. I want to know the minimum range by testing it at higher average speeds.

At the beginning of the drive, the battery is fully charged to 100%. The range is 52 km. I did the test in August and it was between 19 and 23 degrees during this part of the test. Let’s take a look at my results. During the test, consumption varied between 22.8 kWh and 23.1 kWh and this gives a theoretical range of between 52.9 and 55.9 km.

I drained the battery to 0% and the end result on the highway was a consumption of 23.9 kWh and a range of 52.7 km .

Now let’s test the range at lower average speeds in the city. I want to know what the maximum range of this car could be.

At the beginning of the drive, the battery is fully charged to 100%. The range is 53 km. The temperature during this test was between 18 and 19.5 degrees. We are still in August, but I did this test in the evening. Let’s take a look at my results. I first drained the battery to 75% and drove 17.9 km. The average consumption was 22.9 kWh, which is on the higher side. The theoretical range would be 57.9 km. This was because I was driving in a big city like Brussels, where you have to stop a lot for traffic lights. All this stop-and-go driving has an impact on consumption.

After that we still drive in an urban environment, but with a little more opportunity to just drive smoothly. After that, consumption dropped to 20 and 20.5 kWh, which gives a theoretical range of about 67 km. I completely drained the battery to 0% and the range came out at 64.4 km .

Now let’s see how long it takes to charge the battery. This battery has a net capacity of 14.4 kWh. The maximum charging speed of this car is 7.4 kW. Audi says it takes about 2.5 hours to charge the battery. I tested this on a public charger in Brussels and it took 2h45 min.

The charging station had more than adequate charging speed (22 kW), but the built-in charger has a speed of 7.4 kW, so this is what we got.

I get a lot of questions about fuel consumption with an empty battery. I drove 86 km on the highway at 120 km/h with an empty battery and the consumption was 8.2 l.

In conclusion, I can say that the range of the Audi Q5 Sportback Competition 55 TFSI e quattro is somewhere between 52.7 and 64.4 km , based on comparable driving conditions and measured at temperatures between 18 and 23 degrees. When the temperature changes in winter, for example, you will probably get different results.
