This is the VW ID.BUZZ. In this range test, I want to discover the range in real driving conditions. I am going to test the range on the highway to find out the minimum range of this car. I am also going to do a second driving range test at lower average speeds to know the maximum driving range. I also wanted to know how long it takes to charge the battery at a fast charger.

This is the VW ID.BUZZ with the 77 kWh battery. It is the ID.BUZZ Pro version. It has a WLTP range of up to 416 km. The VW ID.BUZZ has an output of 150 kW – 204 hp. It goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.2 sec. The VW ID.BUZZ features rear-wheel drive. Check out our VW ID.BUZZ test drive video.
I will first test the range at higher average highway speeds. I want to know what the minimum range of this car could be. At the beginning of this part of the test, the battery is at 95%. I base my estimated range on average consumption and net battery capacity. I did the test in March and it was between 4.5 and 8 degrees.
For the first part of the test, I drove from Brussels towards Namur for a total ride of 69 km. The battery dropped to 74% and the estimated range based on 24.8 kWh consumption was 310 km. I left the highway to do some sporty driving on country roads. Then the battery had dropped to 67% and the estimated range increased slightly to 324 km.
Now it’s time to drive all the way back to Brussels on the highway. Let’s take a look at my results. I drained the battery to 47% during a drive totaling 152 km and the consumption increased slightly again during this drive. The highway range ended up at 316 km based on an average consumption of 24.4 kWh.
Battery% | Distance driven | Consumption(kWh) | temperature | Estimated range |
---|---|---|---|---|
95% | start | 5 | start test | |
92% | 9 | 27,8 | 5 | 277 |
85% | 32 | 25,8 | 5 | 298 |
81% | 46 | 25,2 | 5,5 | 306 |
74% | 69 | 24,8 | 4,5 | 310 |
73% | 75 | 24,2 | 4,5 | 318 |
67% | 94 | 23,8 | 4,5 | 324 |
59% | 116 | 24,9 | 5,5 | 309 |
50% | 143 | 24,8 | 8 | 310 |
47% | 152 | 24,4 | 316 |
Now let’s test the range at lower speeds in the city. I want to know what the maximum range of this car could be. At the beginning of this part of the test, the battery is at 42%. The temperature was between 4 and 4.5 degrees. I did a test drive of 54 km, first in Brussels. Then I left the city and drove on small town roads. It was in an urban area, sometimes a little more rural, but with plenty of opportunities for continuous driving, usually between 50-70 km/h. We did this test at night. Battery% | Distance driven | Consumption (kWh) | temperature (°C) | Estimated range |
---|---|---|---|---|
42% | 4 | start test | ||
37% | 15 | 18,1 | 4,5 | 425 |
36% | 20 | 17,5 | 4,5 | 440 |
28% | 41 | 18,4 | 4 | 418 |
28% | 54 | 18,3 | 4 | 421 |
Let’s take a look at my results. After a test drive totaling 54 km, I drained the battery to 28%. The average consumption ended up at 18.3 kWh and the estimated range is 421 km.
Now let’s do a charging test at a fast charger. The VW ID.BUZZ is equipped with a combined charging system. With this system, the VW ID.BUZZ can be charged with either AC or DC. For this test, I am going to charge the car at a DC Fast Charger. The VW ID.BUZZ can fast charge at up to 170 kW. VW says it takes 30 minutes to charge from 5% to 80% at 170kW.
At the beginning of the test, the battery is down to 25%. It’s 4 degrees outside. The car indicated that it would take about 1h10 minutes to fully charge the battery. I’m going to do a 30-minute charging test. After 10 minutes, I was charging at a rate of 85 kW. The battery increased to 42% and we gained about 77km on the range indicator. After 20 minutes, I noticed that we were charging at a rate of 70 Kw. I gained another 71 km of range and the battery is now at 58%. After 30 minutes, the battery is at 73%. The charging speed is still at 74 kw. So we went from 25% to 73% in 30 minutes, and we gained 209 km of range.
Start test | After 10 min. | After 20 min. | After 30 min. | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Range indicator (km) | 102 | 179 | 250 | 311 |
Increase range (km) | 77 | 71 | 61 | |
Battery (%) | 25% | 42% | 58% | 73% |
Charging speed (kW) | 85 | 70 | 74 | |
Temperature (°C) | 4 | 5 | 5 | 5 |
I haven’t done an AC charging test with this car, but let’s look at some theoretical information. The charging speed of the on-board charger is 11 kw. AC charging time from 0% to 100% is 7.5 hours at 11 kW.
As a conclusion, I can say that the range of the VW ID.BUZZ is somewhere between 316 km and 421 km, based on similar driving conditions and measured at fairly low temperatures between 4 and 8 degrees. I suspect that at much higher temperatures you will probably get more range.
